SAM WILSON (FdSc, BA, MA).

THE TUTORS’ ASSOCIATION (TTA) ACCREDITED

ENHANCED DBS

Unconventional, highly personalised GCSE & A-Level tuition.

MATHS, 3 SCIENCES, ENGLISH, ECONOMICS, PHYSICAL EDUCATION - THE CORE, COVERED

I don’t believe every student learns in the same way. With over 10 years and thousands of hours of one-to-one teaching experience, I’ve worked with students across GCSE and A-Level, adapting my approach to find the explanation, method or example that makes things click for them.

My students have gone on to study highly competitive subjects including Medicine, Law, Mathematics and Physics at leading universities, with an excellent track record of successful university admissions.

Fully enhanced DBS checked, I offer experienced, individual tuition built around each student — not a one-size-fits-all formula.

The aim isn’t just better grades, but greater confidence, genuine understanding and the ability to perform when it matters.

I am also a professional actor, and perform under the name ‘Sam C. Wilson’ - (hardly much of an alias), so I incorporate a lot of those skills into his work with the young people he helps.

I have a long and extensive career of teaching in groups and home-schooling.  I have thousands of hours (6,586 at last count) of one-to-one tuition experience, and I enjoy what I do, a lot... clearly.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

CHECK OUT THE NECKWEAR!

I wear two pendants most days. One is a ‘J’ for my daughter, which probably says something about what matters most to me. The other is Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, which says quite a lot about how I teach.

I don’t really believe in the idea of being a ‘maths person’ — or, for that matter, a ‘science person’, an ‘arts person’ or an ‘English person’. I prefer the older idea of the polymath: that mathematics, science, art, literature and drama are different ways of understanding the same world.

I teach mathematics and science from the foundations right through to A-level, and particularly enjoy helping students who have never thought of themselves as mathematicians or scientists discover that they can be. I use drawings, diagrams, stories, visual metaphors and plenty of scribbling to make difficult ideas tangible. But it works both ways: mathematics can bring structure to an essay, science can illuminate literature, and drama can teach us how to communicate an idea clearly and confidently.

Being a dad has only strengthened that belief. I’m interested in developing curious, capable people — not putting children into boxes and deciding what sort of mind they have.

So the two pendants sit together rather nicely.

It is clear to me that what makes for great education is almost entirely down to the teaching. Nearly always there is a confidence and belief issue at play.  Everyone needs help from time to time, and there’s no egos here.
